Are You Controlling Your Feelings
Proverbs 25:16 & 28
Verse 16 "If you find honey, eat just enough - too much of it, and you will vomit."
Verse 28 "Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control."
Well, these verses have a whole new meaning to me since my weight loss surgery! LOL However, these verses are something we all should consider when we eat. We all should eat "just enough" to give our bodies fuel, feeling satisfied. NOT feeling stuffed or over-full. How do we do this? With verse 28 - with self-control. How do we get self-control? Most of us cannot have it on our own. We need the assistance of the Holy Spirit. Calling on Jesus to help us!
Daily, when you wake up - you have a routine, right? In that 'routine' there needs to be a moment of prayer/confession to God in that we need His help and guidance throughout our day. I had a MEF (minds eye flash) when I read verse 28, that hit me like a ton of bricks (lol, no pun intended). Walking along with someone, along a beautiful countryside, looking at the beauty. I am with someone. Talking, laughing, enjoying the stroll and day. There is now a wall, like that around a celebrity's home. We come around a curve, and the person I am with, sees the owner of the home driving through their gate and goes absolutely bonkers! Stuttering, clambering to be 'presentable' blabbering and making no sense! The gate is open (a break in the wall), and this person jumps forward losing all self respect and all decency and tries to get close to the person who lives there. They almost look like a little tornado whirling this way and that, just to get next to the person. Sad. Instead of creating an environment of "welcoming" they have actually caused panic and fear on the part of the person in the car! Because of the "lack of control" my friend had, we are now being ushered AWAY from the place, instead of invited in.
As I think back on this verse, I realize there have been MANY times I have run head first into an "opening" of what looked like good stuff, only to over-indulge and be super sorry for it later! Obviously, it actually showed on my 'outside' just how sneaky I was. I was only fooling myself really. I remember SO many times, eating something to the point of needing to vomit. That is NOT a good place to be. Physically or emotionally. So, how do we change this behavior? First of all, by recognizing we do this, and then confessing it to God - then, asking or inviting the Holy Spirit to use the power of Jesus' name, to help us! Change us. Guide and direct us in to making better choices and decisions throughout our day. Oh!!! Temptation WILL be there! But, focusing on truth, and praying God's promises back to Him - we CAN and WILL be successful! It is not easy. My "tool" of having weight loss surgery is NOT always easy! Far from it! However, it is creating in me a new and refined trust in God and His provisions for me.
Today, lets look around us as we venture into our journey called "living a life". Lets enjoy the beauty God has put around us, and NOT cave in to the "broken walls" we come upon. Slowing down and enjoying things. Working hard and diligent in our day to "stop when satisfied" in our choices. If it is food, or work, or even play - take your time, do a good job, and pay attention to the actual "limits" or "boundaries" we need to stay within. Be blessed today! Love ya!
