How To Stop Uncontroled Words
Psalm 141:3-4 "Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies."
This is a pretty straight forward prayer that we can and should pray for ourselves! However, the last line kept jumping out at me. Then the flash in my minds eye. 'Delicacies' are normally food, however here, for us, it can be a number of things!
Dictionary says:
Delicacies: noun
a : the quality or state of being luxurious
b : indulgence
c : something pleasing to eat that is considered rare or luxurious <considered caviar a delicacy>
d : the quality or state of being dainty : fineness <lace of great delicacy>
e : frailty <the delicacy of his health>
The Lord showed me that for us here, in this time in history, a delicacy can be anything that slips in under the guise of 'just a little won't hurt' - which can be food, drink, actions, activities, music, TV, movies ..... oh, it's SO easy to get sucked in and then desensitized!!! We ARE to pray for ourselves. For our own heart, protection, & awareness! We are NOT to partake in the things that are evil for sure, but what about all of the "little things" that slowly pull us away from God? Or pull us away from doing what is right? Or the things that keep us busy and distracted, not being able to serve others for God? OUCH! My "delicacy" is crime solving shows and movies. I could truly binge-watch for several hours! Even if I'm doing something else at the same time.... It is a BIG time sucker, and no productivity comes out of it!
The first MEF (minds eye flash) of lips, or a mouth, having a door. The "door" is what allows things in and or out. It kind of looked like the BIG doors in a Star Wars movie LOL Having guards set on the outside, to watch over all that go in and or come out. The guards at the "door" can easily tell who's coming in, but they can get caught off guard, when someone (or something) comes flying out unannounced! Just like our mouth! Sometimes, just as we "think" we have a hold on what we say, something happens, and out flies something we did NOT intend to say!! Unfortunately, words are REALLY hard to take back! Like blowing on a dandelion in the wind. Can you imagine trying to go and catch all of those little flying seeds after you have blown on one?!?! The same is true of our words. Not always because of that immediate moment, but for the time where those words pop back up in our thoughts. Or, when they pop back up and come out of the mouth of those who were watching around us, that we didn't realize "heard" what was going on. The words we say out loud, or just in our thoughts, are sometimes the 'broken record' that keeps getting played over and over. Unless you are telling yourself TRUTH from Gods word, you are probably being a "bully" to yourself. Those words are the words you want the Lords help in keeping a guard over! The only way to get 'control' over what comes out of our lips: stop and think before speaking. Pray before blurting things out. Really! If you ask God to give you clean thoughts, clean words, and new heart for what you say - he WILL! Yes, there may be some work on your part, but you CAN change your old patterns and habits - with the Lords help.
Today, let's ask the Holy Spirit to help us take an honest look at our routine. Let's ask Him to show us anything that we are not aware of, that has lead us astray. What 'delicacies' we need to stop and or give up. I'm praying for you today. I'm praying for me too. I pray we have a guard over our mouth, not just towards others, but to ourselves too!
